Re: Thoughts in advance of the Gales of November

: The Common Adventure Model (CAM) system is not being recommended as
: the safest way to go paddling. It is adopted for a couple
: reasons: Liability, and Expediency.

: In a litigious environment where people are worried about being
: sued, the leader is the prime target for any law suit. This may
: be acceptable if the leader is a professional who is paid
: sufficiently to cover insurance costs. Since kayaking is a
: relatively risky undertaking insurance is a non-trivial expense.

: For a skilled kayaker leading trips is not "fun", it is
: work. It may be pleasant work, but it is not the same as a fun
: day playing on the water. While some may volunteer to do this
: work on occasion, it is not something most people are willing to
: sacrifice every weekend to for years at a time without
: compensation.

: Leaders are responsible for everyone on the trip. It is their
: responsibility to keep an eye on everyone, keep them together,
: make sure the group paddles in the right places and does the
: right things. Leaders can not ignore the group for a few minutes
: to engage in a little surfing fun or other play or put
: themselves at risk. It is the leaders job to make sure the group
: does not do anything unsafe. An effective leader must be a
: fun-Nazi.

: The CAM system is used because people don't want to pay a leader,
: they don't want to be a leader, and they don't want to paddle in
: a group controlled by a leader. Leaderless groups are preferred
: because people want to go paddling and have some fun. They want
: to paddle with friends, they want to try new things, and they
: appreciate whatever added security they can get from paddling
: with a group of like-minded kayakers. The CAM is the easiest way
: to make this happen.

Nick, thanks again for stating why the cam model exists. I for do not think the cam model is inherently dangerous. Let's not forget a leader may be incompetent, I have witnessed this on several occassions. There appears to be a few people who want a more formalized system and that's fine, nobody is stopping them.
