MILFORD - The fire department and state police are using radar to search the area in the Long Island Sound where kayaker Michael Krupa, 22, of Middletown went missing when his kayak capsized early Sunday morning, U.S. Coast Guard officials said Monday.
Emergency crews have been searching for Krupa for the past two days. He and a friend were in a two-person kayak in Milford about midnight headed for Charles Island when it capsized, officials said. They were not wearing life vests and tried to swim to the island. One of the kayakers swam to a sailboat, was pulled from the water and reported Krupa missing to the Milford Fire Department around 4:40 a.m. Sunday, officials said.
The Coast Guard, state police and fire departments from Milford, Stratford and West Haven searched for him Sunday. Monday, officials said, the Milford fire department and state police are using a side scan radar to search the water amid heavy holiday boat traffic.
