All are welcome!
Norwalk, CT. The Coast Guard Auxiliary - Americas Volunteer Guardians invite you to attend an Open House at the Coast Guard Auxiliary Base, at the Norwalk Calf Pasture Beach on Saturday Aug. 8, 2009, from 10 AM to 2 PM. There will be experienced Guardians to talk with you individually at all times, even while the presentations are underway, so please drop in whenever you are able. Preregistration is not required. Refreshments served all day.
10 AM USCGAUX Flotilla 72 Vice Commander Arthur Gottlieb will welcome attendees and speak about the history of the Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He will also describe the Auxiliary’s current responsibilities as part of the Department of Homeland Security and today’s Guardian mission.
11 AM – On-water communications topics.
How to use a handheld VHF radio.
VHF radio vs. cell phone.
Marine weather channels
Learn how VHF Channel 16 is “911” on the water.
These extremely useful, easy to use and low cost radios require no license to operate. Get some tips on how to use them successfully. A number of different brands with various features will be available for you to try out.
12 Noon – Operation Paddlesmart. Paddling is fun, let the Auxiliary help keep you safe and found! Brochures and “if found” identification stickers will be distributed. Questions on all paddling topics are welcome, including using recreational kayaks, places to paddle, and how to find instruction for sea kayaking. Auxiliarists will help you find what you need to have fun and be safe on the water.
1 PM – Safety on the water.

What is a Vessel Safety Check?
Does a paddler have to know the boating laws?
This is an excellent opportunity to learn boating basics, especially for those who have little or no boating experience.
Auxiliarists are Americas Volunteers Guardians whose missions include boating education. Come down to scenic Calf Pasture Beach, you will enjoy talking about your boat and the sea with us!
Directions to Calf Pasture Beach and the Coast Guard Auxiliary Base in Norwalk - Access is by road or public transport: East Avenue intersects I95 at exit 16 and travels southerly past the East Norwalk (Metro-North station) and the East Norwalk Cemetery down Gregory Boulevard, past the Roger Ludlowe Memorial at the rotary to Calf Pasture Beach Road. Follow signs to Beach Area. Bus service directly to the park entrance is provided by the Norwalk Transit District.
