On my way to visit family in the Midcoast region of Maine, I stopped at Popham Beach today. I put in at the fort just upriver an hour before dead low tide on a calm, sunny day. The fort There were some fun tidal rips around the islands in the river channel on the way out, as well as some scary looking boomers over ledges.. The highlight of the day was a break with 3-4 foot organized waves over sandy bottom that dropped off again before hitting Popham beach. The waves just lifted me up and scooted me along with minimal work. Got some great rides that seemed to last forever. These were waves born to surf a kayak. I highly recommend a stop here next time you visit Maine!
