Re: Vhf radios
In Response To: Vhf radios ()

I don't recommend Standard Horizon. I have an ICom IC-M25 and it has worked out well but have the insurance too. Things do fail. So good so far.

Qualities that I really try to make sure I have in a radio
No external contacts
No Knobs-they get frozen
Power through a door or rubber plug
I do like the Quake feature but haven't really needed it with the IC-M25 unit. A dunking still seems to work ok, but a long soak in a sink, it does help.

I had bought two Standard Horizon HX851 radios and they were just terrible. A top end radio for them. Dip in the water and can't hear anyone, and can't talk to anyone as the mic was also inhibited. The charger contacts corroded. Quite a horrible experience. The customer service just said you kayakers are overly tough on radios. If I had a boat and it was sinking and was in the water. No communication. I also had a SX500 before that. It seemed to be ok but the alloy frame started to corrode and led to a leak. The O'Ring was very complex which makes a potential leak worse.

: Hello, what VHF radio do you recommend? Our Icom won’t charge,
: even with a new battery.
