Friends of Whalebone Cove - Volunteers Needed

Hello! I have a volunteer opportunity that I thought this group would be interested in. This summer I am working with UConn Sea Grant learning about and doing outreach on aquatic invasive species, specifically Water Chestnut and Hydrilla, in the Connecticut River. The Friends of Whalebone Cove is looking for volunteers to help hand pull Water Chestnut from local coves adjacent to the River to protect the biodiversity of the lower Connecticut River Estuary and the ability to enjoy the coves by water recreation activities. When left unchecked, Water Chestnut quickly covers the surface of a water body and can form thick mats of plant material. This not only crowds out natural aquatic plants and leaves other wildlife marginal habitats, but also hinders recreational uses of the water body affected. The Paddle & Pull will last about 2-3 hours.

Bring:

- Canoe, Kayak or Boat

- Water Bottle

- Life Jacket, PFD

- Sun Block
