I used to use the Thule Glide and Set [which I still have] with my plastic boat and had no problem loading it to my car alone, however once I got a composite boat, I was worried about the potential damage if it slid off the mat while sliding it up onto the car. I had invested so much in my composite boat, I didn't want to take any chances and ended up buying the Hullavator. I know it's expensive, but it was worth it to me. I can now load my kayak onto my car at home without any assistance and I love my independence. Good luck!
