My
goal is an Outer Island strip built kayak. However the reality of my
knowledge (or lack of,) my woodworking skills and available space,
suggested I start with something more achievable. My selection was a North
Bay from Chesapeake Light Craft. I purchased this boat as a kit - complete
with all parts precut, fiberglass and epoxy included. Then working in a
borrowed basement (picture attached) I completed the boat over a period of
about 4 months - working only a couple of evenings during the week and
Saturday afternoon.
Finally
one early summer evening I was ready for launch. What a thrill!!!!! I
paddled often through the summer without the varnish coats. Over the
winter I have added some hatches and I WILL varnish before paddling this
year.
All
in all it was the best winter I remember. I gained confidence, the
knowledge I need for a strip built and I have a wooden boat. All I need is
the place and I will be starting my next one.
