designed the first Outer Island (strip-built) in 1996. I've built four since
making refinements to the design based on my paddling experiences. Shown
is my last one and the one that gets sent out in plans. Also shown is a
detail of the recessed hatch for the front VCP.
built the West Greenland skin boat during the Winter of 1999 using instructions from
multiple sources. It's 18 ft long x 20" wide. Quite tippy and very
tight to get into.
A fun project and a neat kayak to have in my fleet. I use it with
caution mostly in warmer weather because it's got float bags and no
bulkheads. It's covered with polyester that's coated with colored epoxy.
So far the epoxy-coated skin has been great. Tough and rot proof.
